Managing waste in emerging markets

I have always found the problem of waste disposal in emerging markets a fascinating and important problem for people to pay attention to, not least because of the huge impact properly implemented programmes can have in those parts of the world. McKinsey has written an interesting piece on the issue this month, focussing on how governments can solve this problem. There are some interesting examples mentioned, for example the work of the Recycling & Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (a government project) and Waste Ventures India (a startup which converts organic waste into compost and is able to charge competitive rates for its collection work).
